Do You Need a Therapist?

Listen above for the entire episode on the Morning Mama Podcast!

“Should I go to a therapist?” I cannot tell you how many times I’ve been asked this exact question. As a former therapist, I’m excited to share my insight on this. My goal is never to be your therapist, but instead I hope to help you heal and grow through all of the topics I talk through.

In today’s blog, I’ll discuss how to know whether or not you need a therapist and how to pick the right one.

Before we get into that I want to introduce myself. My name is Brittany, I am wife, mom of 3 littles, church leader, and Marriage and Family Therapist turned coach. I run the Morning Mama Podcast where I get to help moms heal their minds and spirits so they can live the motherhood they were made for.

Let’s dive in together!

You should see a therapist if you’re experiencing one or more of these four key areas:

  1. If you are suicidal or having thoughts about wanting to kill yourself

  2. If you are facing addiction of any kind, including, but not limited to substances

  3. If you are facing trauma which could be defined as a highly distressing event that continues to affect you now

  4. If your symptoms are debilitating such as not being able to get out of bed, you’re not eating or you continue to have panic attacks

If you are experiencing any of these four key areas listed above, I definitely recommend that you find a therapist. It does not mean you are broken. It does not mean you’re crazy. This blog alone will not be the correct space and support that you need.

What to look for in a therapist? How do I choose one?

  • If you are a Christian and believe in God and you believe in Jesus, you should be seeking out a Christian therapist.

  • Aligning personalities and clicking with someone is super important in a therapeutic relationship, especially when they are speaking into your life.

Myths of Therapists: DEBUNKED

  • Therapists are God. False. They cannot see right through you and know exactly what next steps need to be taken.

  • All therapists are created equal. False. A good therapist needs a theory to guide them, otherwise they will be all over the place.

  • Therapy is evil. False. Therapy can be the right choice for a lot of people. It’s a tool that God can use in your healing process.

  • Therapy is too expensive. False. We put our money where our values are. It’s one of the most invaluable things and worth all of the money. It’s all about shifting priorities and realigning them with God’s Word.

  • Therapy is the only way to heal. False. I do believe this blog is also a space for you to find some healing through the many tools I want to give you.

I see physical health the same as I see mental health. If you have a broken bone you will go to the doctor and have them take x-rays. Just the same, if you are struggling with your mental health; mind, body, and spirit you would seek out therapy.

God heals!

I believe that God can heal our bodies in an instant. Jesus did this to people again and again throughout Scripture. He still does those miracles today. The same goes for mental health. In a moment’s time, I believe that God can heal depression and He can heal anxiety too.

Healing is in God’s hands and in Him as the source of all healing can help guide you to therapy or maybe not at this time. I believe if you go in with prayerful intention to learn and grow, you can utilize that time and God will use it towards your healing.

You don’t have to just seek out a therapist. There are a lot of biblical coaches in churches amongst pastors and so many other people that can speak into your life. Help and healing is near.

I want to help you find healing in a new way and I’m excited to be on this journey with you as you continue to heal. My hope is you are inspired to take that next step which can feel really scary and overwhelming. I can’t wait to hear what God does throughout this part of your journey.

There’s a good reason you are here today reading this post and I’m so glad you are here! I can’t wait to see what God has in store for you.
